Ike Tseng opened a factory in Yuanlin in 1972 to build other people's bikes, Raleighs mostly, and the Merida name on a downtube didn't mean much until 1988. Same Giant problem, different town. The company is still in Taiwan. They make the whole catalog, road through mountain, and they own a chunk of Specialized, which is a whole other argument.
