Grant Petersen started Rivendell in his Walnut Creek garage in 1994 after Bridgestone shut its US office. He had been designing those bikes, and this was the continuation with nobody to answer to. Lugged steel, California, the anti-race-shop. The garage chapter lasted two years, and the town is still Walnut Creek.
