BMC used to stand for something else. Bob Bigelow started it in Grenchen in 1986 assembling Raleighs (Bigelow's Mounting Company), lost the license, and the same letters became Bicycle Manufacturing Company in the mid-90s. Andy Rihs bought it later and that's when it turned into the Swiss race-bike thing, still in Grenchen.
